چکیده

It is well known that a localized electronic impurity state couples to the vibrational modes of an insulating nanoparticle through the ordinary electron}phonon interaction, enhanced by the e!ects of quantum con"nement. In this paper we show that an electron can also interact with the translational degrees of freedom of a nanoparticle. The form of the coupling is dictated by Einstein's equivalence principle and is independent of the ordinary electron}phonon interaction. We calculate the rate of electronic energy relaxation provided by this mechanism and establish its experimental observability. ( 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Ab initio tight-binding analysis of CdS nanocrystals

Spherical CdnSm nanocrystals are studied via an ab Initio tight-binding analysis. Starting from the bulk zinc-blende structure, these nanocrystals undergo relaxation as the geometries optimize to configurations that minimize internal forces. The resulting electronic structure and molecular orbitals are analyzed and compared to the electronic structure and molecular orbitals found in the bulklik...

Surface ligands increase photoexcitation relaxation rates in CdSe quantum dots.

Understanding the pathways of hot exciton relaxation in photoexcited semiconductor nanocrystals, also called quantum dots (QDs), is of paramount importance in multiple energy, electronics and biological applications. An important nonradiative relaxation channel originates from the nonadiabatic (NA) coupling of electronic degrees of freedom to nuclear vibrations, which in QDs depend on the confi...

Electronic structure of and quantum size effect in III-V and II-VI semiconducting nanocrystals using a realistic tight binding approach

We analyze the electronic structure of group III-V semiconductors obtained within full potential linearized augmented plane wave FP-LAPW method and arrive at a realistic and minimal tight-binding model, parametrized to provide an accurate description of both valence and conduction bands. It is shown that the cation sp3anion sp3d5 basis along with the next nearest neighbor model for hopping inte...

Noninertial mechanism for electronic energy relaxation in nanocrystals

The low-frequency vibrational spectrum of an isolated nanometer-scale solid differs dramatically from that of a bulk crystal, causing the decay of a localized electronic state by phonon emission to be inhibited. We show, however, that an electron can also interact with the rigid translational motion of a nanocrystal. The form of the coupling is dictated by the equivalence principle and is indep...

Quantum confined electron-phonon interaction in silicon nanocrystals.

We study the micro-Raman spectra of colloidal silicon nanocrystals as a function of size, excitation wavelength, and excitation intensity. We find that the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon spectrum is asymmetrically broadened toward the low energy side and exhibits a dip or antiresonance on the high-energy side, both characteristics of a Fano line shape. The broadening depends on both nanocryst...
